THE PUNTA REBELS

I got lucky last August. I was in San Ignacio for about 5 days and to my great surprise, the Rebels were there too. The posters were all around, the show was to be at the Blue Angels club. To me, this was a hard place to find. I guess it it used for dances and special events, as I had never noticed it before. It is located on Hudson Street, just up the buildings from the Hudson Street grocery. The name is kind of etched in glass over the door at the second story level. Well, I showed up about 8:00 and waited and waited. The band had set up a simple stage and the famous DJ (I forget his name), was setting up his gear. Finally, about 10:00 the crowd begins to collect and the DJ starts the show. I am ready to go back to the hotel. For some reason, Belize makes me want to be "heading that way" around 10:30 and I usually get up around 6:00. Funny thing is, in 4 trips I have never had a timepiece to work. They work before I leave, they work when I get home, but they just don't work in Belize.

Belikin was the sponser of the show and I chatted with a guy that works for the company. After finding out I was a fan of the Rebels, he got one of the Rebels to come over for a chat, which was barely audible. He was the short one with the little side pony tails. He said his cousin is Titiman, so I assume he is somebody Flores.

Finally, the Rebels cranked up. It was awesome. I loved the circus of sound. They played a few songs I had not heard of, then bam!! They torn into "Freaky" , which is on the On Fire CD, it was at that time the whole place just vibrated to those caribbean rhythms that take me back to Belize everytime I play them in my truck. I just wanna yell out the truck window to whoever I see and Yell "Hey, you! I can't really explain why, but you really really need to go to Belize as fast as you can."

But, you can't see anything at the show. They perform in the dark! I asked someone about this, and they said it was typical to play in the dark. I was really getting the feel. From what I gather people really hit the big events like this, and also gather at the Cahal Pech Bar up the hill on the weekends. At the Rebel show there was a mix of wild ones, a few gringos, lots of Creole girls and many latina ladies as well. They all wanted to dance, but drinking didn't seem to be in excess. I am such an old man in Belize, actually, the fact is, I have always had to work my ass off just to get out of town. I am so tired when I go on vacation. Just imagine, the Rebels show climaxing with maybe "On Fire" or "Dance With Me", and I am sawing logs at the hotel.
